Men's Soccer Advances to Title Match

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The No. 15 Bethel Wildcats beat Dalton State 6-3 Thursday in the 2018 SSAC Men's Soccer Championship Semi-finals in Montgomery. With the victory the Wildcats face No. 2 William Carey in the championship Friday at 7 p.m.

Just a minute and a half into the game Bethel's Pascal Mohungsi scored to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. Brandon Ndip had the assist. Leonardo Ferreira and Don Obare had first period scores and the Cats led at the break 3-1. Obare, Mohungsi and David Boompong had assists in the period.

Ferrira, Rodrigo Campos and Bernardo Torres scored second period goals. Torres and Boompong were credited with assists. Marco Taaffe had two saves.

The Wildcats out shot DSU 18-10 and had a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal.

Bethel moved to 15-3-1 on the season. They have won 13 of their last 15 outings. The only non-wins were a 2-1 loss at William Carey and a two overtime tie at Union College.

The Wildcats took the No. 1 ranked Crusaders of William Carey to the limit on October 13 in Hattiesburg before falling 2-1. Bethel outshot WCU 19-9 and had a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks. The Crusaders had a 5-2 margin in shots on goal. WCU led 1-0 at the break. Bethel's Pascal Mohungsi scored a second period goal but it was not enough.

William Carey defeated (RV) Mobile earlier Thursday 2-1 in two overtimes to advance to the final. The Crusaders are 16-0-1 on the season.

Both teams were dominant during the regular season combining to place nine players on the first team all-conference list and five on the second team all-conference squad.
