BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - In a game that had all the swings and drama of postseason baseball, Bethel University came within inches of a signature comeback before ultimately falling to Cumberland University, 10-8, in 10 innings Friday in the Mid-South Conference Tournament.
The Wildcats (14-29 MSC) showed resilience throughout, erasing a late deficit with a three-run rally in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings, but Cumberland answered in the 10th to escape with the win in the finals winners bracket matchup.
Bethel appeared in control through much of the middle innings. The Wildcats struck first in the third when Adriel Vega delivered an RBI single and Juan Diego Ramos followed with a run-scoring double to make it 2-0. They added two more in the fifth, capitalizing on a Cumberland error and an RBI single from Cade Pilkinton to extend the lead to 4-0.
After Cumberland got on the board with a two-run home run in the sixth, Bethel answered right back in the bottom half. CJ Lattimore drove in a run with a single, pushing the advantage to 5-2.
The momentum shifted dramatically in the seventh. Cumberland erupted for five runs, highlighted by a three-run homer from Caleb Royer, to take a 7-5 lead and seize control of the game. The Phoenix added another run in the ninth, stretching the margin to 8-5 and putting Bethel down to its final three outs.
That's when the Wildcats delivered their best punch.
In the bottom of the ninth, Bethel mounted a clutch rally. Pilkinton came through again with a two-run double down the left field line, cutting the deficit to one. Moments later, Garrett Taylor lifted a sacrifice fly to right, tying the game at 8-8 and sending the Bethel dugout into a frenzy.
The Wildcats nearly walked it off in the inning, but Cumberland escaped the jam and forced extras.
In the 10th, Cumberland capitalized on control issues, using a two-run single from Wilser Then to regain the lead at 10-8. Bethel was unable to answer in the bottom half as the Phoenix closed out the contest.
Offensively, Bethel pounded out 14 hits, led by Pilkinton's 3-for-5 performance with three RBIs. Lattimore added two hits and drove in a run, while Vega and Ramos each contributed two hits and an RBI.
On the mound, Alex Sterling gave Bethel a solid start, allowing two runs over 5.2 innings. Christian Wilkes was charged with the loss.
Despite the setback, Bethel's postseason run is far from over.
The Wildcats will turn around quickly and return to the field Friday evening, facing the winner of the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) and Campbellsville matchup at 7 p.m. in an elimination game.
With the fight they showed Friday, the Wildcats made it clear they're not done yet.
