MCKENZIE, Tenn. –With winds howling over twenty miles per hour, the Bethel Wildcats and the UT Southern FireHawks met in a MSC doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Wildcat Park.
Game one saw UTS outhit Bethel 11-3 and win 12-1. UTS jumped out to a 3-0 lead after a three-run first inning homer by Michael Wurtz. Logan Rogers homered in the third to give the FireHawks a 4-0 lead. The Hawks added five more runs in the inning to take a commanding 9-0 lead. The Wildcats scored a single run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Jose Olmeda who drove in Bryan Catala. UTS got the run back in the sixth. The Hawks went ahead 12-1 on a two-run homer by Noah Junker in the top of the seventh. Marco Santa suffered the Wildcat loss while Griffin Sahli picked up the UTS victory.
The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in game two. Bethel's Catala scored on a UTS error in the first. Wyatt McKee scored on an error in the second inning to put the Wildcats up 2-0. UTS scored a run in the top of the third. Bethel's Paden New homered in the bottom of the fourth to give the Cats a two run margin again at 3-1. UTS tied the game with two runs in the seventh. A two run eighth proved to be the difference as the Hawks won 5-3. UTS outhit Bethel 12-5. Tyler Proctor was charged with the loss. Nathan Curtis picked up the victory.
Bethel lost their fifth straight and dropped to 9-23 overall and 5-12 in the MSC.
UTS has won five straight and moved to 24-10 and 10-5.
The teams finish the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
