MCKENZIE, Tenn. –Nick Proto slammed a game winning homer in the bottom of the ninth to give Bethel a thrilling 1-0 win over the visiting (RV) Campbellsville Tigers Friday at the Kahlden Complex in McKenzie. It was Proto's team leading third homer of the year.
It was a pitcher's duel from the start. Bethel's Alex Valcarcel pitched 7.2 innings allowing just five hits. Trey Boren picked up the win in relief. Campbellsville's Aaron Hutchinson held Bethel to just three hits but was the hard luck loser.
A defensive highlight in the game was Bethel's right-fielder Jack Surber throwing out a Tiger runner trying to score in the top of the eighth.
The Wildcats evened their overall record to 4-4 overall and moved to 3-1 in the MSC. The Tigers fell to 2-2 and 2-2 in the league.
The two teams play a twin bill Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
