PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The Bethel Lady Wildcats split their doubleheader at Pikeville Friday afternoon. The Cats won game one 5-3 but fell in extra innings in game two, 6-5.
With the split, Bethel is 6-2 and 4-2 in the MSC. The Bears are 2-4 and 2-4 in league play.
In game one Bethel jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on a Macey Cox RBI double. Cox followed with an RBI single in the third. Gillian Grahn had a RBI double later in the inning. Kayla Gillespie gave Bethel a 4-0 lead with a RBI single of her own. The Lady Cats scored a single run in the fourth thanks to a UPIKE error. The Bears scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to cut Bethel's lead to 5-3. The Lady Wildcats outhit the Bears 10-3 but left 12 runners on base. Billie Douglas picked up the Wildcat win.
Game two was highlighted by a four run third inning by the Wildcats. The big hits were a two run double by Alexis Wheeler and an RBI double by Maddie Cochran. The Cats lost in heartbreaking fashion however. They led 5-4 going into the bottom of the ninth only to see Pikeville's Erin Bolen tie the game with a solo homer. The Bears would score on a wild pitch in the eighth to win 6-5. Kaylee McKinley suffered the loss.
The teams face off again Saturday at 11 a.m. CST. The series is being played at the Paul Butcher Field.
