MCKENZIE, Tenn. – Two talented softball teams squared off in rainy and damp conditions in McKenzie Friday afternoon as the Bethel Lady Wildcats played host to No. 16 Campbellsville University.
In game one, Bethel jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second on a Gillian Grahn RBI double. Kayla Gillespie followed with a RBI single and Bethel led 2-0 after two. Melanie Alexander had an RBI single in the fourth to put the Lady Cats 3-0. Campbellsville pushed across a run in the top of the fifth to cut Bethel's margin to 3-1. After Alexis Wheeler doubled in the bottom of the inning, Madison White drove her home with an RBI single and the Lady Cats took a 4 -1 lead. The Lady Tigers scored a run in the top of the sixth put Douglas hung tough and shut them down the remainder of the game to hand Bethel a 4-2 win. Bethel outhit the Tigers 8-4. Douglas finished with a four-hitter and picked up the victory to move to 4-1 on the season. Katy Chadwell suffered the Tiger loss.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the third in game two. Bethel tied the game on an RBI by Leah Hayes in the bottom of the fourth. Campbellsville scored two runs in the sixth to grab a 3-1 lead. The Lady Cats had the tying runs in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh but Karson Williams who picked up the Tiger win worked out of the one out jam. Bethel's Maddie Cochran was charged with the loss. Both teams finished with six hits.
Bethel finished the day at 11-3 and 7-3 in the MSC. Campbellsville is 13-7 and 6-2.
The teams will play a twin bill Sunday at noon and 2 p.m.
