WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. –The Bethel Wildcats had timely hitting and great pitching in their doubleheader sweep at the University of the Cumberlands Thursday afternoon. The Cats stretched their winning streak to eight straight with wins of 5-0 and 4-1.
The Wildcats improved to 9-4 and 7-1 in the MSC.
The Patriots fell to 18-3 and 0-2 in league play.
Game one was a gem for Bethel's Alex Valcarcel as he went 8 1/3 innings allowing just four hits. Giovannie Nieves closed out the game retiring the side in the ninth. The Wildcats scored two runs in the seventh. Juan Torres had an RBI single and then later in the inning Jack Surber scored on a fielder's choice. The Cats scored three more runs in the ninth. Logan Beecham had a two run RBI single. Luke Patterson had a sacrifice RBI earlier in the frame. Valcarel entered the game with a 2.29 ERA. He picked up his second win on the season. Nick Proto had two of Bethel's seven hits on the day.
The Cats scored two runs in the first in game two. They added two more runs in the third. Nick Proto and Torres drove in single runs in the first. Surber and Torres scored runs on Patriot errors in the third. Marco Santa picked up (3-0) the win pitching 61/3 innings and allowing just three hits. Nieves picked up the save in relief.
The teams will play a single game Friday at 11 a.m. CST.
