LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. –The Bethel Lady Wildcats opened their soccer season on the road in Lawrenceville, Georgia Sunday afternoon against the Georgia Gwinnett Grizzlies. The Lady Wildcats played solid from start to finish and won 3-1. It was scoring in the first period and defense in the second which proved to be the difference.
The Lady Cats jumped out to 1-0 lead with a Jodi Butler goal at the 28:30 mark. Elvira Martin and Brittany Bray added goals to give the Lady Cats a 3-1 lead after the first period. Shanay Ricketts had four saves in the period. The teams battled to a scoreless deadlock in the second period.
The Lady Cats had eight shots on goal and a total of 11 on the day. Butler had five of the shots on goal. Ricketts finished with four saves. The Grizzlies had 12 total shots with five of those being on goal attempts. Matilda Waldt kept GGC in the match with five saves.
It was the third meeting between the two programs with Bethel gaining their first win in the series. GGC had won the earlier two meetings.
Bethel Coach Misty Aird said, "I thought we really played well. We challenged them on offense and our defense was solid the entire match. Our young ladies have worked hard preparing for the season and it paid off today. We know we still have a long way to go to reach our potential but we are thrilled with the opportunity to play and pleased with our start."
The Cats remain on the road traveling to LSU-Alexandria Thursday. The action gets underway at 11 a.m.
