MCKENZIE, Tenn. – The Bethel Wildcats opened their season Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of the visiting Brescia Bearcats. The Cats won 8-1 and 5-3.
Bethel jumped out early in game one scoring two runs in the first, two in the second and three in the third. They added a lone run in the sixth. Brescia's lone run came in the third. Highlights included an RBI triple by Bethel slugger Nicholas Proto. Ruber Medina homered and drove in two runs. Juan Torres and Baylor Steelman each drove in single runs. Antonio Costas picked up the win while Carlos Rivera suffered the Bearcat loss. The Cats outhit Brescia 10-7.
Game two saw Brescia take a 1-0 lead in the third. Bethel's Jack Surber tied the game with an RBI single in the fourth. The Wildcats took a 2-1 lead in the fifth when Steelman scored on a passed ball. After the Bearcats scored two runs in the top of the sixth to grab a 3-2 lead, Bethel's Proto homered in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. Proto would strike again with a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth which sent the cold crowd into a frenzy as the Cats won 5-3.
Brescia outhit the Wildcats 5-3 and Bethel committed three errors in the game but won with the long ball. Chandler Harmon picked up the win while Thomas Clark suffered the Bearcat loss.
Bethel leads the series between the two at 13-2 and is 11-1 in McKenzie versus the Bearcats.
The two teams square off again for a pair of games Sunday beginning at noon.
