GEORGETOWN, Ky. – The Bethel Wildcats took the No. 1 Georgetown Tigers to the wire Saturday afternoon before falling 85-80 in the Commonwealth. Bethel led 70-63 with 8:53 left in the second half but the Tigers outscored the Cats 22-10 the remainder of the game to pull out the victory.
With the loss Bethel fell to 2-3 overall and 0-3 in the Mid-South Conference. The Tigers improved to 3-1 and 1-1. GC leads the all-time series 3-1.
It was a tight game throughout with 10 ties and five lead changes. Georgetown Coach Chris Briggs was ejected at the 15:04 mark of the second half in a game which was described by some as "a wild one." Bethel led by three at that point but the Tigers rallied using a 34-23 run including the 22-10 margin to win.
Chandler Clements led Bethel with 20 points. Jamarius Mayberry followed with 18 tallies while Kamron Rose had his third straight game in double figures with 15 points.
Derrin Boyd was among four Tigers who finished in double figures and led Georgetown with a game high 22 points.
Coach Jeff Britt was pleased with his squad's effort. "I thought our effort was totally different than Thursday and our approach was much better as well. Georgetown is No. 1 in the country for a good reason. We still have corrections that have to be made and we will build on this effort. I'm encouraged and feel positive about our future. We were in position to win and that is all you can ask of your team."
Bethel returns to action Wednesday night at Oakland City University in Oakland City, Indiana with tip-off slated for 7 p.m.
