ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. – The Bethel Lady Wildcats grabbed their first wins of the season Friday in the Milligan Mountain Madness beating University of Michigan-Dearborn 3-0 and Union College 3-2. Bethel improved to 2-5 while Dearborn fell to 1-5 and Union dropped to 0-5.
Bethel beat Dearborn 25-21, 25-19 and 25-20. Katelyn Van Hooser led Bethel with 13 assists. Maggie Brooks followed with 10 assists. Madison Ralph had 10 digs while Hannah McGowan had 10 kills.
The Bethel/Union match was a five set marathon affair. The Lady Wildcats won 25-18, 21-25, 26-24, 18-25 and 16-14. Van Hooser had a huge match with 29 assists and 12 digs. McGowan had 18 kills and 10 digs. Ralph finished with 24 digs while Alex Lipsey contributed with 12 kills. Briana Monk had 10 digs.
Coach Starla Cupples was pleased with the victories. "These were two good wins for us. We are still working on our game but it was nice to see the fight our girls had, especially in the end allowing us to pull out the five set win over Union. Alex (Lipsey) had a solid game and scored the winning kill."
The Lady Cats return to action Saturday in day two of the event. Bethel faces St. Andrews University Saturday morning at 8 a.m. and wrap up play facing host school Milligan College at 2 p.m.
