MOBILE, Ala. – Riding a five game winning streak, the No. 16 Bethel Lady Wildcats continued their three game road trip with a showdown against the Mobile Rams Saturday in Mobile. The Lady Cats made it six in a row with a 69-61 win over the Rams. Bethel moved to 16-3 and 8-1 in the SSAC. Mobile dropped to 6-13 and 4-5. The Rams had won three in a row prior to the loss.
It was the 13th meeting between the two programs with Bethel now leading the series 9-4. The Lady Cats have won four straight in the series.
The Lady Cats sprinted out to a 25-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. Mobile answered outscoring Bethel 23-12 in the second and trailed the Cats 37-33 at the half. Bethel had a 20-12 margin in the third and it allowed a cushion for the Lady Cats to hold on for the eight point victory.
Bethel's Myah Taylor was sensational with 35 points and ten rebounds. She knocked down seven of Bethel's ten three's in the game. The nation's leading scorer scored 37 Thursday night at Stillman. Bethel leads the nation in made three's with 183. Madison Steppee had a nice game with 10 points and ten rebounds. Tyasia Willis was just short of a double-double with 12 points and eight rebounds. Kendra Langham led Mobile with 13 points.
Bethel was 24-of-63 from the floor for 38 percent. Mobile was 20-of-58 at 34 percent. The Rams hit seven three's in the game. The Lady Wildcats had a 45-27 advantage in rebounding. They are 14-2 when they win the battle of the boards.
Coach Chris Nelson was pleased with his team's effort and the result. "That was a lot of fun for our team and staff. It was a physical road battle and I thought our ladies adjusted to the style of the game and were able to withstand some big Mobile runs throughout the contest. We were hot in the first half and built up an 18-point lead but Mobile battled back and made it tough. I thought we played with a little too much finesse at times but we adjusted and started to attack again and get to the rim in the second half." He added, "Madison (Steppee) responded in great senior fashion and we needed that. Myah hit some timely shots and didn't settle for the outside shot when the game got tight. Ty (Willis) sparked us with some big buckets off the bench and of course it was comforting to have Morgan (Martin) back in the lineup."
