MCKENZIE, Tenn. – With both squads battling temperatures in the lower 90's No. 20 Georgia Gwinnett held off the upset bid of Bethel Sunday afternoon in the Bethel Labor Day Soccer Classic. The visitors from the Peach State beat the Lady Cats 2-0. Bethel dropped to 3-2 on the season while Georgia Gwinnett moved to 3-0.
A first period goal by Joy Mertzig gave GGC a 1-0 lead at the break. Georgia Gwinnett out shot Bethel 13-0 and had a 5-0 margin in shots on goal in the period. Bethel's Keeper Holly Wright had four saves in the period to keep the match tight.
Georgia Gwinnett made the goal hold up as they stymied Bethel's offensive attack throughout the contest. GGC would add another goal with 10:47 left in the match and lead 2-0 after a score by Stina Anderson.
GGC outshot Bethel 27-3 and had an 11-1 margin in shots on goal. Wright had nine saves on the day.
Up next for Bethel will be a road trip to Cumberland University Wednesday to meet the 19th ranked Phoenix. Action is slated for 3 p.m.
