Lady Cats Fall in Season Openers at Union

JACKSON, TENN. – The debut of Coach John Weeks was not what he and the Lady Cats were hoping for Friday afternoon at Union University in Jackson. Maryville beat Bethel 5-2 in game one. Union beat the Lady Wildcats 17-1 in game two.

In game one after taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning the Lady Wildcats saw Maryville University score single runs in the fifth and sixth innings and then three in the top of the seventh to beat Bethel 5-2.

Bethel's Iesha Kizer's two run double in the bottom of the first gave Bethel a 2- 0 lead. Casey Wade pitched well until the Lady Saints were able to push across the late runs for the win.

Bethel had five hits and committed two errors while Maryville had nine hits and committed one error.

Wade suffered the loss while Katie Grunett picked up the win for the Saints. Maryville pushed their early season record to 2-1.

In game two Union scored four runs on six hits in the first. They pushed across nine runs in the second inning and took total command of the game. They later scored four in the fourth and cruised to the victory. Freshman Anna Comer drove in her first collegiate run for Bethel.

Union rapped out 21 hits while Bethel managed only three hits in the game. Gabby Morris picked up the win while Madisen Adkins suffered the loss. Union improved to 2-3 with the win.

Games against LeMoyne-Owen scheduled for Saturday at Union were cancelled due to the weather forecast which calls for rain in the West Tennessee area.

Bethel returns to action traveling to Freed-Hardeman on February 15. The doubleheader begins at 3 p.m. in Henderson.
