Second Half Comeback Falls Short as Wildcats Cannot Overcome Slow Start
MCKENZIE, Tenn. — The Bethel Wildcats battled with resilience and effort Wednesday night at Crisp Arena, but an early deficit proved too much to overcome as the Wildcats fell 83–68 to Cumberland in MSC action.
Cumberland came out sharp in the opening half, knocking down shots and capitalizing at the free-throw line to build a 48–26 halftime lead. Bethel struggled to find consistency offensively in the first 20 minutes but regrouped coming out of the locker room with increased energy and defensive intensity.
David Starr led the Wildcats with 23 points, aggressively attacking the basket and converting at the foul line. Chauncey Hughes III followed with 15 points while providing steady leadership on both ends of the floor. Alonzo Rhodes Jr. and Ethan Turner helped anchor the paint as Bethel won the rebounding battle, 41–38.
The Wildcats showed their best stretch after halftime, outscoring Cumberland 42–35 in the second half and cutting the deficit to single digits on several occasions. However, Cumberland answered each push with timely scoring to maintain control down the stretch.
Head coach Jeff Britt pointed to the team's response after halftime as a positive takeaway.
"We didn't set the tone early the way we needed to," Britt said. "But the fight and competitiveness we showed in the second half is what this team is capable of. That's the standard we have to bring from the opening tip."
Hughes echoed his coach's sentiments, emphasizing the team's effort and mindset moving forward.
"We can't wait until halftime to play Bethel basketball," Hughes said. "But I'm proud of how we stayed together and kept competing. If we bring that second-half energy for a full 40 minutes, we're going to be tough to beat."
With the loss, the Wildcats dropped to 16-8 overall and 2-6 in the league. It was Bethel's fifth straight loss.
Bethel will look to build on its second-half momentum as the Wildcats continue conference play in the coming days.
The Cats travel to Freed-Hardeman for a 3 p.m. tip-off on Saturday.
