Bethel Takes Two over Culver-Stockton

Game 1: Bethel Wildcats Capture a Close one

MCKENZIE, Tenn. - The Bethel Wildcats opened their season at the Kahlden Complex with a doubleheader sweep over the Culver-Stockton Wildcats. In the first game, Bethel's defense and pitching stole the spotlight as they took down Culver-Stockton 2-1 in a well-fought battle.

Starting on the mound for Bethel was Walker Ward, who was on top of his game, allowing only four hits while striking out eight over seven innings. His performance was steady, as he worked his way through the game with a mix of finesse and control. The only blemish came in the second inning when Culver-Stockton's Jordan Scott crushed a solo home run to give his team a brief 1-0 lead.

Bethel answered back in the fourth inning with a clutch performance. Ivan Vega, who had a solid game at the plate, tied it up with an RBI single, bringing home Jared Hall, who had reached base after a single. In the fifth, Bethel's offense didn't slow down. Vega came through again with another RBI, this time plating Juan Diego Ramos with a single that put Bethel ahead 2-1.

Culver-Stockton struggled to find offensive momentum after Scott's homer. Despite a couple of base hits from Noble Oxford and Kannon Kirk, they were unable to bring anyone else across home plate. Davin Meier started for Culver-Stockton and pitched five solid innings, allowing two runs on four hits, and striking out three, but was charged with the loss. Garrett Hogard pitched a scoreless sixth inning in relief, but it wasn't enough to help his team mount a comeback.

In the first game, the winning pitcher for Bethel was Walker Ward. Ward delivered a dominant performance on the mound, pitching seven innings while allowing only four hits and one run. He struck out eight batters and walked just one, helping lead his team to a 2-1 victory. His control and composure were key in keeping Culver-Stockton's offense at bay, earning him the win in the season opener.

Game 2: Offensive Explosion for the Bethel Wildcats

In the second game of the doubleheader, Bethel exploded offensively to take a commanding 13-2 victory over Culver-Stockton, completing the sweep at the Kahlden Complex.

The game was essentially decided in the second inning, as Bethel's bats came alive in a massive nine-run outburst. Jared Hall led the charge, going 3-for-4 with four  RBIs, including a pair of key extra-base hits. He hit a double and contributed a timely single to drive in runs as Bethel's offense surged. Garrett Taylor, who also had a standout game, finished with three  RBIs and two  hits, including a double. His performance, along with Hall's, helped put the game out of reach early.

While Culver-Stockton's offense was limited, they did manage to scratch across a run in the sixth inning, thanks to an RBI single from Wyatt Wright and an RBI from Kannon Kirk, but the damage was already done. Zach Zimmer, who started on the mound for Bethel, delivered a strong performance, tossing six innings while allowing only one run on five hits. He struck out four and walked two, earning the win for Bethel.

Bethel's offensive depth was evident, as players like Zack Griffith (2-for-3, 1 RBI), Wyatt McKee (2 RBIs), and CJ Thomas (2 hits, 1 RBI) contributed to the blowout. Even in the later innings, Bethel continued to add to their lead, with Cade Pilkinton contributing a late RBI.

On the other hand, Culver-Stockton struggled to find any consistency on the mound. Starting pitcher Clayton Woods (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing nine runs on nine  hits in just two innings. Carson Selk and Charlie Stergos both saw action in relief but were unable to slow down Bethel's red-hot bats. The team also struggled with their defense, committing one error in the game.

Bethel continued to show off their depth, as their bullpen also performed well. JJ Gray closed out the game with a scoreless inning, allowing one hit while striking out one.

With the victory, Bethel moved to 2-0 on the season, while Culver-Stockton dropped to 0-2. Bethel's explosive offense, combined with solid pitching and defense, set the tone for a dominant performance in the second game. For Culver-Stockton, the team will look to regroup and make adjustments before their next outing.

"Very happy with our guys today. We played quality defense with no errors, and our pitching did a great job. Ward, a true freshman, threw a complete game in game one, and that was great to see—we're really happy for him. Zimmer backed it up with six  strong innings in the second game. Offensively, we had some nerves in the first game, but we did enough to get the win. In the second game, I felt like our entire lineup had quality at-bats and solid results. It's a good day to build off of. Baseball is a long season, but it's great to start with two wins." – Coach Rusty Thompson
