Baseball Drops One Run Decision to Cumberland U

MCKENZIE, Tenn. – The Bethel Wildcats returned to conference play Friday afternoon hosting the (RV) Cumberland University Phoenix in a three-game weekend series at Wildcat Park at the Khalden Complex in McKenzie.

The Phoenix took game one winning 5-4.

The Phoenix scored two runs in the top of the second to grab the lead.

The Wildcats cut the deficit in half with a single run in the bottom of the third. After two were out, Wyatt McKee reached on an error. J T Morgan was hit by a pitch. Paden New had an RBI single to make it 2-1 after three.

Cumberland pushed across a run in the top of the fifth to lead 3-1.

Bethel answered when Jose Olmeda scored on a fielder's choice on a ground out from Wyatt McKee in the seventh. The run cut the CU margin to 3-2.

The Phoenix scored a run in the eighth on a Bethel error to go back up by two at 4-2.

Cumberland added an insurance run in the ninth which proved to be big.

The Cats put together a rally in the ninth but fell short losing by a run. Morgan had a two-run single in the bottom of the inning, but the Wildcats left the tying run in scoring position.

Bethel outhit the visitors from Lebanon 7-6. The teams combined for seven errors in the game. Bethel had four on the day.

John Boren pitched well but suffered the loss. Trevor Muzzi picked up the CU victory.

The Wildcats dropped to 10-18 overall and 8-10 in the MSC. Bethel is now 4-13 at home on the season.

The Phoenix improved to 23-16 and 12-3.

The teams return to action Saturday for a twin bill beginning at 1 p.m. Senior Day ceremonies will be held between the games. Logan Beecham, John Boren, Hunter Brown, Jacob Foster, and Noah Miller will all be recognized and saluted.
