Baseball Splits Doubleheader with ONU
MCKENZIE, Tenn. - The Bethel Baseball Cats returned to action Saturday playing host to (RV) Olivet Nazarene in the annual Civil War Classic.
For those who like pitching, Wildcat Park at the Kahlden Complex was the place to be Saturday.
The teams split on the day with Bethel winning game one 2-1. ONU won game two 1-0 in eight innings.
Bethel's Marco Santa fired a complete game six hitter to win game one. Ivan Vega and Jose Olmeda drove in single runs for the Wildcats.
Game two saw the Cats outhit the visitors 5-4 but a throwing error in the top of the eighth by Bethel allowed the only run of the game. Wyatt McKee pitched seven strong innings but was charged with the loss.
Coach Rusty Thompson was pleased with the effort of his squad, "I was very pleased with our overall performance today. We have begun to improve and grow as a team. Marco Santa pitched a great complete game win, and the true freshman Wyatt McKee was great. I only wished we could've gotten him the win. We were a hit away from two wins. We look to build on today and take it into tomorrow."
Bethel is 1-3 on the season. ONU is 2-4.
The teams have met 37 times. Bethel owns a 23-13 -1 advantage in the series.
The squads will play another twinbill Sunday with action beginning at 1 p.m.
