MCKENZIE, Tenn. – Bethel University Head Bass Fishing Coach Garry Mason and the Wildcat fishing program received national attention in an October 7 feature published by The New York Times.
Written by Ken Belson, "Need Help Paying for College? Try Bass Fishing" examines the growth of competitive fishing and the opportunities it creates for young anglers.
The article highlights Bethel's pioneering role as the first college to offer bass-fishing scholarships, beginning in 2009. It also notes the program's 13 national titles and the 15 graduates who have gone on to fish professionally under Mason's leadership.
Belson described Mason meeting with anglers and their families at the Strike King Bassmaster High School National Championship at Kentucky Lake, where the Bethel coach offered 20 scholarships during the tournament weekend.
Mason also emphasized the value of a college education in preparing anglers for the business demands of professional fishing, including managing finances, promoting themselves, and securing sponsors.
Bethel Athletics salutes Coach Mason and the Wildcat bass-fishing program on this national recognition and their continued commitment to creating educational opportunities through the sport.
