Experience and Depth Fuel Lady Wildcats’ Outlook for 2026–27

10/25/2026 5:31:00 PM

MCKENZIE, Tenn. – With 10 returning players, four returning starters and a talented group of newcomers, the Bethel University women's basketball team enters the 2026–27 season with an experienced foundation and a focus on continued improvement.
The Lady Wildcats finished 28–6 overall and 9–3 in the Mid-South Conference. They advanced to the NAIA Elite Eight in Sioux City, Iowa, falling 82–77 to Dakota Wesleyan in the national quarterfinals.
The Lady Wildcats return conference player of the year Micah Hart, along with fellow returning starters Hallie Turner, Mikee Buchanan, and Meredith "MJ" Simmons. Their experience, combined with competition throughout the roster, gives Bethel plenty of reasons for optimism.
"We're excited about the experience we have returning this season. We bring back the majority of our roster, and that continuity gives us a strong foundation, said Head Coach Chris Nelson.
Bethel must replace All-American Madison Hart, whose departure leaves a significant void. The returning group will look to meet that challenge through veteran leadership, improved depth, and contributions from several players.
Nelson added, "Obviously, losing an All-American like Madison Hart is significant. Players like that aren't easy to replace. But we're confident in the group we have coming back and the leadership they've developed over the past few years."
Micah Hart headlines an experienced group of guards. Several returning players have logged significant minutes since their freshman seasons, giving the Lady Wildcats familiarity with the demands of collegiate basketball and the program's expectations.
Buchanan will look to build on the considerable progress she made between her freshman and sophomore seasons. The coaching staff highlighted her growth as a shooter, driver, and playmaker, along with improved defensive play, confidence, and communication on the court.
Micah Hart was the MSC Player of the Year, and NAIA First-Team All-American, Mikee Buchanan was NAIA Second-Team All-American, and First-Team All-MSC.  Madison Hart NAIA Third-Team All-American and First-Team All-MSC.
Micah led Bethel with 18.7 points per game, while Buchanan averaged 15.5 points and 6.3 rebounds. Madison concluded her career third in program history in scoring and fifth in rebounds.
Senior Kylie Reynolds is another player to watch. The staff expects her shooting ability and experience to make an impact as she prepares for her final collegiate season.
Simmons, the team captain, joins Reynolds and Laura Nichols in a senior class expected to set the tone both on and off the floor.
"MJ, Kylie and Laura have been in our program, understand our system, and set the standard every day through their work ethic and experience," Nelson said. "They've earned the respect of their teammates and will play a key role in leading this group both on and off the court."
The Lady Wildcats also return Kylee Alexander, Ambria Ferkany, Adalyn Koelling and Tessa Statom. Koelling and Simmons provide experience in the post, while the returning junior class offers additional leadership throughout the roster.
Four newcomers will strengthen Bethel's depth. Junior Grace Billington arrives as a transfer from the University of Tennessee at Martin, bringing experience and versatility at guard and forward.
"We're also excited to add junior transfer Grace Billington from UT Martin," added Nelson. "She brings experience, versatility, and competitiveness that will make us a deeper team."
The freshman class includes 6-foot Sania Reaves from Gibson County, guard Harmony Bell from Middleton and 6-foot-1 Stephanie Schott from Roswell, Georgia. The group adds size, athleticism, and competition for playing time.
Competition is expected to be particularly strong at guard, where Billington joins an established group of returners. The coaching staff believes that daily competition will help sharpen the team as the season progresses.
Bethel's nonconference schedule is designed to prepare the Lady Wildcats for the challenges of Mid-South Conference play. The emphasis will be on learning, improving, and developing consistency throughout the season.
"Our expectation is to improve every day, compete at a high level, and play together as a team," the staff said. "We want to be playing our best basketball in March. If we stay committed to our culture and continue to grow throughout the season, we'll put ourselves in a position to be successful."
The Lady Wildcats also look forward to the continued support of the Bethel community.
Coach Nelson summed up his feelings about Bethel's supporters. "Their energy, passion, and commitment mean so much to our team." "We appreciate everything they do for our program, and we can't wait to see them in the stands this season."
Coach Nelson enters his 21st season as head coach of the Bethel University women's basketball program in 2026-27, having established the Lady Wildcats as a consistent contender on the conference and national levels.
Nelson enters the season with a 431-215 (.667) career record and a 209-122 (.631) conference record. During his tenure, Bethel has made 16 appearances in the NAIA National Tournament, highlighted by one Fab Four appearance, four Elite Eight appearances and eight Sweet Sixteen appearances. His teams have also captured eight conference championships.
Bethel was picked to win the MSC and picked fourth in the national preseason poll.
