CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – After falling to Georgetown in their opening round game in the MSC Softball Tournament Final Six in Columbia, the Bethel Lady Wildcats faced an old foe in Freed-Hardeman Friday afternoon in an elimination game in Campbellsville. The game marked the 42nd time the two programs had faced off with FHU holding a 30-11 margin in the all-time series. Freed had won the last six straight including a four game sweep in Henderson earlier this season.
Bethel, the four seed lost 7-4 to Georgetown Thursday while Freed-Hardeman, the No. 3 seed beat Martin Methodist Friday but lost to No. 2-seed Lindsey Wilson Friday night.
The Lady Wildcats played well but lost in heartbreaking fashion falling to Freed 3-2.
The Lady Lions put together three straight hits with two out in the fourth to grab a 1-0 lead after four.
In the top of the fifth the Lady Cats battled back as freshman Kayla Reed drove in two runs with a two out single.
With the 2-1 lead the pressure remained on lefty Maddie Cochran. Cochran was outstanding but FHU loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs Billie Douglas entered the game in relief. Lady Lion Sophie Dunavant singled to right to drive in two runs to give FHU the dramatic win.
Bethel outhit Freed 8-5 but stranded eight runners. Cochran suffered the hard luck loss while Morgan Crawford picked up the Freed- Hardeman win.
No. 18 FHU advances to face Georgetown at 6:30 Friday night. The game will be played at Sparks Park in Columbia. Bethel finished their season at 26-16.
