OWENSBORO, Ky. –OWENSBORO, Ky. - The 2021 MSC Men's Tennis Tournament began on Thursday with Opening Round matches at Centre Court and Moreland Park.
Bethel (Tenn.), Thomas More (Ky.) and Pikeville (Ky.) all advanced to Friday's Quarterfinals. Bethel takes on top-seeded Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) at 3 p.m. CT at Centre Court, Pikeville will face No. 2 seed Cumberlands (Ky.) at 5:30 p.m. CT at Centre Court while Thomas More takes on No. 3 seed Cumberland (Tenn.) at 5:30 p.m. CT at Moreland Park.
Bethel vs. Freed-Hardeman
Results
Ninth-seeded Bethel (3-11) defeated No. 8 seed Freed-Hardeman (3-10) 4-3. The Wildcats No. 1 singles duo of Joao Okano and Renato Gravina got the match started with a 6-3 victory over Aleksa Pesic and Caden Arnold. Joao Andre and Juan David Hernandez clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory over Arthur Calandre and Dalton Young.
In singles play Bethel got wins from Okano at No. 1 singles, Marcos Neves at No. 3 singles and Andre at No. 4 singles. The Lions got wins from Lopez at No. 2 singles, Jobe at No. 5 singles and Young at No. 6 singles.
Thomas More vs. Shawnee State
Results
Sixth-seeded Thomas More (6-9) swept No. 11 seed Shawnee State (2-14) 4-0. Sergio San Pablo and Fernando Martin Paz defeated Zayden Rinehart and Jacob Freeland 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. The Saints earned the doubles point with a 6-0 victory at No. 3 doubles from Brandon Kwok and Gavin Dail.
Jared Haught defeated Aiden White in straight-sets 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles while Martin Paz won 6-0, 6-1 over Freedland at No. 3 singles. Juan Villagrana clinched the win for the Saints defeating Austin Hanshaw 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.
Pikeville vs. Georgetown
Results
No. 7 seed Pikeville (5-6) defeated 10th-seeded Georgetown (1-13) 4-1. Pikeville's Timur Chsherbakov and Juan Medina defeated Logan Smallwood and Hunter Nosek 6-1 at No. 2 doubles. Carlos Villamizar and Juan Alzate got the doubles point for the Bears with a 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles.
Luis Gayoso picked up a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Jared Towell to increase the Bears lead to 2-0. Juan Alzate gave Pikeville a 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles. After Georgetown won No. 4 singles, the Bears clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles.
