BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The 2021 MSC Women's Tennis Tournament got underway on Thursday with the Opening Round at Centre Court.
Martin Methodist (Tenn.), Thomas More (Ky.) and Shawnee State all picked up victories to advance to Friday's Quarterfinals. Martin Methodist will face top-seeded Cumberlands (Ky.) at 10 a.m. CT at Centre Court. Thomas More will take on No. 2 seed Lindsey Wilson at 12:30 p.m. CT at Centre Court while Shawnee State will face third-seeded Campbellsville at 12:30 p.m. CT at Moreland Park.
Martin Methodist vs. Pikeville
Results
The ninth-seeded RedHawks (3-10) opened up the tournament with a 5-0 victory over the No. 8-seeded Bears (4-9). After a forfeit at No. 3 doubles, Martin Methodist clinched the doubles point with a victory at No. 1 doubles. The RedHawks' Emely Castro and Leovanna Viamonte defeated Pikeville's Luisa Diaz and Gabriela Guacanes 6-3.
Following a forfeit at No. 6 singles, Martin Methodist went up 3-0 in the match when Margaret Lucas defeated Camila Agudelo 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Viamonte increased the RedHawks lead to 4-0 with a 6-3 6-0 victory over Riley Mullins at No.4 singles. Martin Methodist clinched the match when Shayla Youngblood picked up a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 5 singles over Erica Metzger.
Thomas More vs. Bethel
Results
The seventh-seeded Saints (5-10) defeated No. 10 Bethel (2-1) 4-1 to advance to the quarterfinals. Thomas More's Matison Perry and Kimberly Sabaga got the match started with a 6-1 victory over the Wildcats Anabella Baralt and Samantha Jo Stone in No. 1 doubles.
Bethel's Luana Wild and Sophia Vasconcellos defeated Thomas More's Jana Riffe and Cassie Saner 6-2 at No. 2 doubles. With the doubles point on the line, the Saints' Aman Dail and Sydney Johnson defeated Bethel's Kelsie Seiber and Kensley Crossno 7-5.
Dail defeated Stone 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 singles to increase Thomas More's lead to 2-0. Bethel got on the board when Vasconcellos defeated Perry 6-4, 6-1 in No. 2 singles. Kimberly Sabga defeated Wild 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1 singles to give the Saints a 3-1 lead. Thomas More clinched the match when Riffe picked up a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Crossno.
Shawnee State vs. Freed-Hardeman
Results
No. 6 seed Shawnee State (7-8) defeated 11th-seeded Freed-Hardeman (1-12) 4-1. Kiersten Hensley and Claire Carruthers defeated Freed-Hardeman's Skylar Sullivan and Emaleigh Board 6-0 at No. 1 doubles. Shawnee State's Jessica Willard and Grace Eberhard clinched the doubles point for the Bears with a 6-1 win over the Lions Jordan Reed and Camryn Reed at No. 3 doubles.
Hensley gave the Bears a 2-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Sullivan at No. 1 singles. Willard defeated Jordan Reed 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. Freed-Hardeman got its lone point of the match at No. 3 singles when Juliana Alvez defeated Sara Martin 6-3, 6-3. The Bears clinched the match when Lacey Urban defeated Camryn Reed 6-2, 6-3.
