DECATUR, Ala. –The Bethel Lady Wildcats saw their bats go cold losing to the Faulkner Lady Eagles 5-1 Thursday afternoon in the opening round of the 2019 SSAC Softball Championship presented by Buffalo Wild Wings being held in Decatur, Alabama.
Faulkner's Caitlin Perry handcuffed the Lady Cats allowing just two hits in seven innings. It was Perry's 17th win of the season. Billie Douglas scattered six hits through four innings and allowed just one run but suffered the Bethel loss. Faulkner broke the game open scoring four runs in the sixth. The big hit for the Eagles was a two-run double from Kendall Bennett. All four runs against Maddie Cochran were unearned. Faulkner outhit the Lady Cats 11-2.
Bethel's Morgan Hunt singled to lead off the sixth and later scored on an Eagle error. The only other Bethel hit was a single by Amanda Perry in the first inning.
No. 4 seeded Bethel dropped to 25-23 while No. 5 seeded Faulkner improved to 27-21.
The Lady Wildcats meet Brewton-Parker Friday at 10 a.m. Faulkner meets top seeded Mobile Friday at noon. No. 8 seeded BPU beat Stillman 6-1 Friday morning and then fell to Mobile 3-2 Friday afternoon.
Bethel beat BPU three of the four games played in McKenzie in mid-March.
The double-elimination tournament runs through Saturday, May 4, with all games being played at Wilson Morgan Softball Complex in Decatur, Ala.
