HATTIESBURG, MS – The Bethel Lady Wildcats bounced back from a tough loss at Loyola with a solid victory at William Carey Saturday. The No. 16 Lady Cats moved to 6-2 and 1-1 with a 64-53 win over the Lady Crusaders. Bethel has never lost to WCU and leads the series 13-0. WCU dropped to 1-3 and 0-2.
A 31-13 advantage in the second quarter by Bethel proved to be the difference in the game.
Bethel shot 45 percent from the floor connecting on 23-of-51 attempts. They hit seven three's. WCU shot 43 percent knocking down 19-of-44 shots. They hit eight three-pointers. Both squads had problems with turnovers. Bethel had 21 while the Crusaders had 28 on the day. Bethel had a 27-18 advantage in points off turnovers.
Morgan Martin led Bethel with 19 points. She was three of five in three-point attempts. Millie Bryant had 17 points and seven rebounds. Tyasia Willis and Mickey Head each contributed with 10 points each. Danyelle Lewis led WCU with 18 points.
Coach Chris Nelson was pleased with his squad. "I am really proud of our players with this bounce back win. They played with energy and we received great production from our guard play. I thought our bench was loud and ready to play when called upon. We have to cut down our unforced turnovers but we are pleased with our improvement on the offensive end."
Bethel returns to action Friday playing at 6 p.m. in the Jackson Invitational. They meet No. 5 Wayland Baptist in famed Oman Arena. Ten ranked teams will play five games both Friday and Saturday with action beginning at noon each day. See related story at www.bethelathletics.com
