DECATUR, Ala. – The Bethel Lady Wildcats saw Brenau break open a tight game with five runs in the fourth inning and it proved to be the difference as the top seeded and No. 2 nationally ranked Golden Tigers beat the Lady Cats 7-1 in the SSAC Championships in Decatur, Alabama Thursday afternoon. Bethel had beaten Martin Methodist earlier in the day to advance to the winner's bracket.
The double-elimination tournament is taking place at the Wilson Morgan Softball Complex, with the final two teams receiving automatic bids to the NAIA Softball National Championship.
Brenau scored two runs in the second to grab a 2-0 lead. Bethel cut the deficit to 2-1 on a sacrifice fly in the fourth by Iesha Kizer driving in Marissa Davis.
Bethel was outhit in the game 10-4. The Lady Wildcats committed three errors in the game. Two of the miscues game in the decisive fourth inning. Kathleen Daniel was the winner while Bailey Moore suffered the loss.
Brenau is 27-0 against SSAC opponents on the season.
Coach Larry Geraldi commented on the day. "I am proud of our effort today. We battled back in game one and showed a lot of character and poise. In game two we battled as well. Daniel had a season low five strikeouts and our kids were not intimidated. I am pleased on how we fought even in the loss."
The Lady Cats meet the winner of the Blue Mountain – Martin Methodist game Friday at 2 p.m. BMC and MMC play Friday morning at 10 a.m.
