MCKENZIE, Tenn. –The No. 11 Bethel Lady Wildcats fell to 3-3 on the season with a tough 72-61 loss to No. 6 Campbellsville Saturday in the SSAC/MSC Women's Basketball Challenge being held at Crisp Arena in McKenzie. The Lady Tigers moved to 3-0 on the year.
The game was tied at 11-11 at the end of the first quarter. A 21-8 run in the second quarter propelled the Tigers to a double digit lead and they went on to lead at the break 41-27. Bethel played catch-up the remainder of the game and would cut the deficit to seven at 51-44 in the fourth quarter but CU's late surge sent the lead back to double figures and Bethel would fall in the end.
Campbellsville shot 48 percent from the floor hitting 25-of-52 attempts. They hit seven three's and connected on 15-of-17 free throw attempts. Bethel was 21-of-51 from the floor and hit six three's. The Lady Cats hit 13-of-17 free throw attempts.
Both teams were plagued with turnovers. Campbellsville committed 27 while Bethel had 32.
Laurhen Pickett led Bethel with 18 points. Jasmine Whittemore followed with 12 hitting four three-pointers. Her efforts moved her into 12th on the all-time career list with 117. She passed former Bethel star Abree Haddock.
Bethel Coach Chris Nelson commented, "We are not happy about the loss but we are encouraged after the way our kids played the last two nights. We played hard and with a sense of urgency and if we continue to do that we will be fine. This tough schedule will make us better come February and March. Coach Colvin has a really fine basketball team and she does such a great job. We wish them the best in their conference."
Bethel returns to action Thursday hosting Warren Wilson at 6 p.m.
