Lady Cats Fall in MSC Championship Battle

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — The Bethel Lady Cats saw their Mid-South Conference Tournament run come to a close Monday evening, falling 64-56 to Freed-Hardeman University in the MSC Championship Finals  at Bowling Green Arena.

In a tightly contested matchup between two of the league's top programs, Bethel (25-5) battled from start to finish but was unable to overcome key stretches by the 27-3 Lady Lions.

Freed-Hardeman opened with a narrow 15-12 advantage after the first quarter, but Bethel answered in the second period. Strong defensive possessions and improved offensive rhythm helped the Lady Cats keep pace, trailing by just one at halftime.

The third quarter was Bethel's most efficient offensive stretch. The Lady Cats shot 60 percent from the field and were perfect from beyond the arc in the frame, keeping the championship within reach heading into the final period. However, Freed-Hardeman capitalized late, holding Bethel to 21.1 percent shooting in the fourth while converting key free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

Micah Hart led the Lady Cats with 17 points and six rebounds, knocking down three shots from beyond the arc. Madison Hart added 16 points, eight rebounds, and six assists in an all-around effort. Mikee Buchanan finished with 14 points, while MJ Simmons chipped in seven.

Freed-Hardeman shot 85.2 percent from the free-throw line and turned turnovers into 17 points, which proved to be pivotal in a game that remained competitive throughout. FHU's Ally Weathers led all scorers with 23 points.

Head Coach Chris Nelson praised his team's fight and resilience following the loss.

"I'm incredibly proud of this group," Nelson said. "We didn't always shoot it the way we wanted, but our effort and heart never wavered. We competed for 40 minutes against an outstanding team. This group has shown toughness and togetherness all season, and tonight doesn't change that. We'll learn from it and get ready for what's next."

That next opportunity will come at home, as the Lady Cats will host the First and Second Rounds of the NAIA National Tournament on March 13 and 14 at Crisp Arena. With a 25-5 record and a strong body of work, Bethel now turns its focus toward making a deep postseason run in front of its home crowd.

For the second year in a row, Crisp Arena, the home of the Lady Wildcats, will serve as one of the 16 venues to host first and second round action. The Lady Wildcats won both games last year and that propelled them on to establish program history as they later reached the Fab Four in Sioux City, Iowa. The Lady Cats are 184-43 all-time in the building which opened in 2012. Fan support has played a big factor in the success the teams have enjoyed through the years at home.

Each First & Second Round site will feature four teams in the first two rounds of a single elimination tournament. The winner of each four-team site will advance to Sioux City, Iowa, and the Tyson Events Center, for the NAIA Women's Basketball National Championship Final Site March 19-24.

All 48 games in the 2026 First & Second Round will air live on Urban Edge Network. For links to mobile and smart TV apps, visit NAIA.org/Watch.

A special invitation is extended to Bethel and area fans by Bethel Vice President of Athletics Derek Horne. "We are so proud and honored to serve again as a host of the NAIA 1st and 2nd Rounds. This aids our university, the City of McKenzie, Carroll County, and the surrounding area in so many ways."  Horne added, "We would love businesses, and individuals to join our team as sponsorships are available at all levels to make these days memorable for all, especially our great Lady Wildcats."
