Lady Wildcats Grind Out Gritty Conference Win
MCKENZIE, Tenn. - On a physical Thursday night, the Bethel Lady Wildcats embraced the grind and pulled away late, earning a 58–43 conference victory over Cumberland University. It was a game mudded early by the road team's defensive pressure but ultimately decided by Bethel's toughness and execution.
Cumberland came in determined to slow the pace and disrupt rhythm, turning the opening quarter into a battle of willpower. Passing lanes were crowded, shots were contested, and every possession had to be earned. Bethel weathered the early storm and edged in front 13–11 after the first quarter, staying poised despite the rugged tempo.
The Lady Wildcats began to impose their presence in the second quarter, relying on effort plays and defensive discipline. Offensive rebounds and forced turnovers helped Bethel create separation, taking a 28–20 lead into halftime while continuing to control the game defensively.
The third quarter remained a physical chess match. Cumberland continued to muddy the waters, but Bethel never lost control. The Lady Wildcats defended with purpose, limited clean looks, and entered the final period positioned to strike.
They did just that.
Bethel exploded for 20 points in the fourth quarter, turning a hard-fought contest into a decisive win. The Lady Wildcats attacked downhill, knocked down timely perimeter shots, and were sharp at the free-throw line. Defensively, Bethel slammed the door, holding Cumberland to 12 fourth-quarter points to seal the outcome.
Mikee Buchanan delivered a strong all-around performance with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while MJ Simmons and Madison Hart each chipped in 13 points. Hart's composure at the line and Simmons' aggressive play fueled the late surge, as Bethel forced 22 turnovers and turned defense into momentum.
After the game, Head Coach Chris Nelson highlighted his team's resolve.
"That was a tough, physical conference game," Nelson said. "Cumberland did a great job of muddying it up early, but our kids stayed tough, trusted each other, and really closed the game the right way in the fourth quarter."
With the win, the Lady Wildcats improved to 21–3 overall and 6–2 in conference play, continuing to show they can win not only with skill—but with grit when the game demands it.
The No. 3 Lady Cats travel to Freed-Hardeman Saturday with tip-off slated for 1 p.m. in Henderson.
