No. 14 Lady Cats Fall to No. 11 Lady Tigers
MCKENZIE, Tenn.- In a tense and hard-fought home MSC conference game, the No. 14 Bethel Lady Wildcats dropped their contest against the 11th ranked Georgetown Lady Tigers, suffering a 65-56 loss at Crisp Arena in McKenzie Thursday night.
From the opening tip-off, the atmosphere was electric. Both teams showed intensity, with Georgetown's suffocating defense and Bethel's high-energy offense clashing in the early moments. The Lady Cats started strong, matching Georgetown point-for-point in the first quarter. By the end of the period, both teams were locked in a 19-19 tie.
Georgetown began to pull away in the second quarter using a 26-8 margin to lead 45-27 at the half.
The Lady Tigers led 61-41 at the end of the third quarter.
Bethel rallied in the fourth quarter, outscoring Georgetown 15-4 in the final 10 minutes. However, their comeback efforts were hampered by missed shots and turnovers. Georgetown's defense, led by the gritty Teionni McDaniel, who grabbed four rebounds and provided crucial defensive stops, kept Bethel at bay. Though Bethel's defense generated some fast-break points, it wasn't enough to close the gap as the Lady Tigers held on for the road win.
Georgetown's Sophie Smith was a standout performer, finishing with 18 points, including a 3-of-4 performance from beyond the arc. Her long-range shooting was a major factor in keeping Georgetown's offense humming despite Bethel's attempts to stifle her and teammate AJ Stevenson who had a game high 20 points. Kayra Freeman came off the bench with 10 points for the Tigers.
Micah Hart and Mikee Buchanan led Bethel with 14 points each. Kyla Taylor came off the bench with 10 points and four rebounds.
Despite the loss, Bethel's effort was evident. The Lady Cats held their own in several key areas, including points off turnovers and second-chance points, where they outpaced Georgetown. Yet, their shooting struggles were undeniable. Bethel shot only 32.4% from the field and just 22.7% from the three-point range. They couldn't match Georgetown's offensive efficiency, particularly when it came to shooting from deep and converting free throws.
The game ended with a somber mood for the Lady Cats, but with plenty of lessons to take forward. Coach Chris Nelson soke his team after the final buzzer, reminding them of their resilience and the long road ahead.
Georgetown moved to 20-6 overall and 6-5 in the MSC. Bethel fell to 19-7 and 4-7.
After the tough loss, Nelson addressed his team with a mixture of frustration and optimism. "We didn't get the result we wanted tonight, but we cannot forget the fight we showed, "We went toe-to-toe with one of the top teams in the country. Yes, we have things to improve, but this is not the end of our journey. Every mistake is an opportunity to grow, and we will learn from this. We'll get better, and we'll bounce back stronger."
Nelson told the squad, "You've got the talent, the heart, and the will to compete at the highest level." We've got work to do, but I believe in each and every one of you. Let's use this to fuel our fire, and let's finish the season on our terms. We still have to be more consistent."
The Lady Cats close out the regular season Saturday hosting the University of the Cumberlands. It will be Senior Day with action beginning at 1 p.m. Ceremonies will begin at 12:40 p.m.
