No. 9 Lady Cats Suffer Tough Home Loss to #3 Campbellsville
MCKENZIE, Tenn. - The Bethel Lady Wildcats fought valiantly at home but couldn't overcome an early deficit, falling 87-72 to the #3 Campbellsville Lady Tigers. Despite a resilient comeback effort in the middle quarters, the Lady Cats were unable to close the gap, as the Lady Tigers stretched their lead to 15 points by the end of the afternoon.
A Rough Start
Campbellsville came out firing, opening the game with a 14-2 run that left the Lady Cats reeling. Struggling to find their rhythm offensively, Bethel committed costly turnovers and missed early opportunities, allowing the Lady Tigers to set the tone. Lauren Lee and Whitney Hay spearheaded Campbellsville's first-quarter dominance, combining for 13 points in the opening period.
Fighting Back
The Lady Cats regained their composure in the second quarter, led by Madison Hart's relentless scoring inside. Hart, who finished with a game-high 29 points on 11-of-16 shooting, carried Bethel's offense during their comeback bid. Her ability to attack the basket and convert at the free-throw line (7-of-8) kept the Lady Cats within striking distance.
Hallie Turner also stepped up as a playmaker, dishing out an impressive 11 assists to go along with her 10 points. Micah Hart chipped in with 14 points, adding key buckets during Bethel's strongest stretches in the second and third quarters.
The Lady Cats cut it to 67-65 but the Lady Tigers made a last run of their own. By the end of the third, the Lady Cats had narrowed the gap to single digits, trailing by just four. The home crowd roared with every basket, sensing the possibility of a dramatic upset.
Campbellsville's Response
However, the Lady Tigers showed why they're ranked #3 in the nation. Whitney Hay was unstoppable in the paint, leading Campbellsville with 24 points and eight rebounds, while Lauren Lee orchestrated the offense with 20 points and 10 assists. The Lady Tigers' bench also made a significant impact, with Talynne Shearer contributing 14 points in 23 minutes.
Campbellsville's efficiency was the difference, as they shot 50% from the field and a blistering 91.7% from the free-throw line. Their ability to capitalize on Bethel's 18 turnovers helped them stretch the lead to 15 by the final buzzer.
Bethel dropped to 17-4 and 2-4. CU improved to 19-0 and 5-0.
Takeaways
Despite the loss, the Lady Cats showed grit and determination, especially in the second and third quarters. Madison Hart's dominance in the post and Hallie Turner's playmaking were bright spots for Bethel. However, turnovers and Campbellsville's depth proved too much to overcome.
The Lady Cats will look to regroup and build on this effort as they move forward in conference play. Their resilience and ability to battle against one of the top teams in the nation demonstrates their potential for a strong finish to the season.
Coach Chris Nelson commented, "Today was a high-quality basketball game in a great atmosphere. Campbellsville is very efficient and tough. We had our opportunities and could not get key stops that would allow us to get out in transition. We will be better for playing in this game."
