Lady Cats Conclude Non-Conference Play with Win Over Fisk

MCKENZIE, Tenn. – The Bethel Lady Wildcats wrapped up their non-conference schedule with a hard-fought game against the Fisk Lady Bulldogs at Crisp Arena Monday night. In what turned out to be a challenging outing, the Lady Cats struggled to find their rhythm offensively but displayed resilience and teamwork in front of their home crowd. Despite the cold shooting, the Cats prevailed winning 67-50.

The No. 16 Lady Cats moved to 16-1. Fisk dropped to 6-13.

Bethel moved to 169-38 all time in Crisp Arena.

A Cold Shooting Night

From the start, the Lady Cats found themselves battling against more than just their opponents. Shots that typically swished through the net seemed to rim out, leaving the team shooting just 34.3% from the field. Beyond the arc, the struggles were even more pronounced, as they hit only nine of their 36 attempts for a 25.0% conversion rate. However, their ability to capitalize at the free-throw line was a factor where they went 12-of-14 (85.7%).

Micah Hart: A Shining Star

Amid the shooting woes, freshmen guard Micah Hart rose to the occasion. With an impressive 23-point performance on 8-of-13 shooting, Hart was a consistent offensive force. She was effective from long range, sinking 2-of-5 three-pointers, and perfect at the charity stripe, where she converted all five of her free-throw attempts. Beyond scoring, Hart contributed five rebounds, three assists, and two steals, showcasing her all-around game.

Mikee Buchanan Steps Up

Joining Hart in leading the charge was forward Mikee Buchanan, who delivered a stellar performance with 19 points. Buchanan was efficient, going 7-for-12 from the field and an impressive 4-for-8 from three-point range. Her physical presence in the paint and tenacity on the boards resulted in seven rebounds, including several key defensive stops. Buchanan's efforts underscored her role as a dependable playmaker on both ends of the court.

Key Contributions from the Bench

While the starters bore the brunt of the scoring, the reserves played critical roles in providing energy and hustle. Kylee Alexander chipped in four points and grabbed two rebounds in 12 minutes of play, including a crucial three-pointer that ignited a spurt in the second half. MJ Simmons added grit and determination, pulling down five rebounds and scoring two points. Although their contributions didn't fill the stat sheet, the bench players' defensive efforts played key roles in the win.

Defensive Resilience

Despite their shooting struggles, the Lady Cats refused to back down defensively. They tallied 11 steals as a team, with Hart and Buchanan leading the way. Their defensive energy translated into several transition opportunities, though finishing at the rim remained a challenge throughout the game.

 Contributions Despite Shots Not Dropping

For players like Kylie Reynolds and Madison Hart, it was an off night offensively. Reynolds, known for her scoring ability, finished with nine points on 3-of-12 shooting, including 2-of-11 from beyond the arc. Madison Hart faced similar challenges, hitting only 1 of her 11 field-goal attempts. However, both players remained active defensively and contributed on the boards, with Reynolds adding two rebounds and Hart collecting four.

Looking Ahead

As the Lady Cats close the chapter on their non-conference schedule, the focus now shifts back to conference play. Head Coach Chris Nelson acknowledged the challenges of the night but praised the team's effort and resilience. "It wasn't our best shooting performance, but we competed hard, and that's something we can build on," the coach remarked.

The Lady Cats will aim to sharpen their offensive execution and capitalize on their defensive intensity as they prepare for the MSC. With standout performances from players like Micah Hart and Mikee Buchanan and valuable contributions from the bench, the team has the pieces in place to make a strong run in conference play.
