Lady Wildcats Hang Tough but Can’t Breakthrough in Campbellsville

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. –The Powell Athletic Center in Campbellsville can be a tough place to play for visiting teams, and that trend continued again for the (RV) Bethel Lady Wildcats Saturday as the No. 1 Tigers defeated the Cats 71-64. Bethel hung tough, especially in the second half but dropped to 0-6 all-time in Taylor County. Campbellsville has an 14-2 overall advantage in the series. The remodeled basketball court within the Powell Athletic Center was dedicated to legendary Campbellsville women's basketball head coach Dr. Donna Wise before the game.

The Lady Cats led 11-6 but Campbellsville used an 18 -8 run to close out the first quarter to take a 24-19 lead at the end of the stanza. Ashton Hulme led Bethel with eight points in the quarter.

Campbellsville used a 10-0 run to lead 40-24 in the second but Bethel rallied to stay in the game. Keely Morrow was a big factor, scoring 11 first half points. Hulme finished the half with 10 points. Campbellsville shot 60 percent in the half and led 45-34 at the break. Both teams hit seven three-pointers in the first twenty minutes.

The Cats outscored CU 20-16 in the third to pull within 61-54 after three. Morrow finished the quarter with 19 points.

Bethel continued their surge in the fourth. Freshman Kalynn Howard hit two huge three-pointers in the quarter, the last came with five minutes left to pull the Cats to within 68-64. Several late turnovers hurt Bethel however, and they could never close the gap.

Bethel was 21-of-55 from the field at 38 percent. They finished with nine 12 three-pointers. CU was 27-of-56 at 48 percent from the floor and finished with nine made treys. The Tigers had a 33-25 rebound advantage.

Morrow led Bethel with 19 points. Bryant had 14 points and five rebounds. Bryant has 989 career points and 509 career rebounds. Only 18 players have scored 1, 000 points or more in program history. She is the 16th Lady Cat to have 500 or more career rebounds. Only nine players have scored 1,000 points or more and grabbed 500 rebounds or more as a Lady Wildcat. Hulme had 13 points while Howard finished with 12 tallies.

Five Lady Tigers finished in double figures with Sarah Sutton leading her squad with 15 points.

Bethel dropped to 4-4 overall and 1-3 in the MSC. The Cats have dropped three games in a row.

Bethel played the game without starting guard and leading scorer Ryann Roberts who was out with an injury.

Campbellsville moved to 8-0 and 4-0.

The Cats return to action Thursday, hosting Arkansas Baptist at 5:30 p.m. The Countdown to Tip-off Show begins at 5 p.m.
