William Carey Sweeps Lady Wildcats in Hattiesburg
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Bethel Lady Wildcats traveled to Hattiesburg Wednesday to meet the No. 12 William Carey Crusaders in a doubleheader.
The Crusaders took game one 13-2 in five innings. WCU scored two runs in the first, three in the second, five in the third and three in the fourth.
Bethel had runs driven in by Emma Johnson and Kennedy Gillespie in the third for their only two runs.
WCU outhit Bethel 12-6. Jezabelle Quintana suffered the Wildcat loss.
Game two saw the Wildcats jump out to an early lead. Kennedy Gillespie drove in Alexis Wheeler with a ground out in the first. The Crusaders tied it with a single run in the bottom of the inning.
William Carey scored four runs in the second to lead 5-1.
Wheeler and Jada Wynn scored on an error by WCU in the third to cut the deficit to 5-3.
Wheeler, the reigning Mid-South Conference Player of the Week made it 5-4 when she stole home in the fifth.
WCU responded again by scoring four runs in the bottom of the inning and upped their lead to 9-4.
Gillespie drove in Wheeler with an RBI double in the seventh but it wasn't enough as WCU won 9-5.
William Carey outhit the Cats 11-7 in the game. Lauren Reimsynder was charged with the Bethel loss.
WCU moved to 11-1 on the season. Bethel dropped to 4-4.
The games were the first of an eight game road trip as the Cats will travel later in the week to Gulf Shores for the Gulf Coast Invitational.
The Cats meet No. 8 Central Methodist Friday at 9 a.m. and (RV) Texas A&M Texarkana at 11:15 a.m.
