Bethel University Men's Soccer 2026 Season Preview
MCKENZIE, Tenn. – Defending a championship is never easy, but the expectations surrounding the Bethel University men's soccer program remain as high as ever entering the 2026 season. The Cats were 13-2-2 overall last year and were 4-1-1 in the MSC.
In a stunning Round of 16 upset at the NAIA National Championship in Orange Beach, the tournament's No. 1 overall seed saw its postseason run cut short, falling 1–0 to a disciplined and opportunistic Grand View University squad. Grand View went on to capture the national championship.
Head coach Jaru (JJ) Malang enters his 12th season (119-49-15) leading the Wildcats with a roster that blends experienced returners, impact transfers, and talented international newcomers. While Bethel graduated only five seniors from last year's conference championship squad, several key contributors earned opportunities to continue their careers at the NCAA Division I level, creating a fresh look without changing the program's championship mindset.
"Our expectations haven't changed," said Coach Malang "Even with the roster turnover, we believe we have what it takes to defend our conference championship and continue building on the success of our program."
Experienced Core Returns
Leading the returning group are William Kusi, Serzhan Aitzhanov, Isaac Espinoza, and Israel Rodriguez. Although none were full-time starters a season ago, each gained valuable experience and is expected to assume a much larger role in 2026.
The Wildcats will also rely on a veteran senior class that includes Rodriguez, Genaro Dumestre, Callum Bryce, and transfer Tim Hanns to provide leadership throughout the season.
While team captains have yet to be announced, Kusi and As Mouhamadou Ndiaye have already emerged as vocal leaders during preseason training, setting the tone for a team focused on repeating as conference champions.
Reloaded with Talent
Bethel's recruiting class features a combination of experienced collegiate transfers and highly regarded international talent expected to make immediate impacts.
Headlining the newcomers is senior midfielder Tim Hanns, who transfers from Carson-Newman University. Hanns brings valuable collegiate experience, leadership, and composure to the Wildcats' midfield and is expected to become one of the team's key playmakers.
Additional newcomers include:
- Boris Agyman – Montgomery College-Rockville
- Norbert Ocheing – George Mason University
- Yao Guy-Yoan – Northeastern Junior College
- Denzil Watson – Freshman forward from Kingston, Jamaica
- Osman Assan – Midfielder from Ghana
- Ansah Nana Boateng – Midfielder from Ghana
- Luiz Antonio Lima Costa
The coaching staff believes this recruiting class has the talent and depth to immediately compete for playing time and strengthen every area of the field.
Replacing Championship Production
The Wildcats must replace the production and experience of standout performers Souleymane Balde, Juan Diego Corral, Ishmael Fuseini, and Enock Owusu, all of whom played significant roles in last season's championship run.
Rather than relying on one player to fill those voids, Bethel expects its depth to be one of its greatest strengths. Competition throughout preseason has been intense, particularly in the midfield and attacking positions, with several players positioning themselves for expanded roles.
Hanns is expected to anchor the midfield, while Kusi and Ndiaye provide stability and leadership along the back line. Players such as Kusi, Hanns, Boateng, Assan, Watson, and Espinoza are all poised for breakout seasons, while newcomers Ocheing, Agyman, Guy-Yoan, Watson, Assan, and Boateng are expected to contribute immediately.
Coach's Outlook
"We only graduated five players, but we also lost several key contributors who earned opportunities to continue their careers at the NCAA Division I level," Coach JJ said. "While this is a different group, we're excited about the talent we've brought in and the culture we've established. We're building another winning team."
"I have tremendous confidence in the leadership of this team. Players like William Kusi, As Mouhamadou Ndiaye, and Tim Hanns have embraced those responsibilities and continue to grow every day."
"We're especially excited about our newcomers. Nana Boateng, Denzil Watson, Norbert Ocheing, Osman Assan, Boris Agyman, and the rest of this recruiting class bring quality, energy, and a hunger to compete."
"Our schedule will challenge us from the opening match, but that's exactly what we want. We respect every opponent, but we believe our players are prepared for the challenges ahead."
"Our expectations remain the same every season—to compete for championships. We believe this group has the talent, character, and work ethic to defend our conference title and continue making history."
A Message to Wildcat Fans
"To our fans, thank you for your continued support of Bethel Soccer. We ask that you continue believing in this team. We'll work every day to represent Bethel with pride, compete with passion, and give you a team you'll be proud to support throughout the season."
The Wildcats will open the 2026 campaign with their sights set on another Mid-South Conference championship and a return to national postseason play. With a talented mix of veteran leadership and exciting new faces, Bethel believes the foundation is once again in place for another memorable season.
