Bethel Falls to No. 1 Freed-Hardeman in MSC Title Game, Awaits National Tournament Fate

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The Bethel Wildcats saw their Mid-South Conference Tournament run come to an end in the championship game, falling to No. 1-ranked Freed-Hardeman University in a hard-fought battle for the league crown.

Facing the top-ranked team in the nation, Bethel battled from start to finish but ultimately could not overcome the depth and efficiency of the Lions. Freed-Hardeman controlled key stretches of the game, capitalizing on second-chance opportunities and timely shooting to secure the MSC Tournament title.

The Cats trailed by 23 in the second half but rallied as they had all weekend and cut the deficit to six with one minute left, but Freed held on for the win. Other than their lone loss to Life earlier in the season, Bethel became the only team the Lions had not beaten by double figures all season. FHU improved to 29-1 while Bethel fell to 19-12.

Chauncey Hughes III led the Cats with 17 points. Brayden Nunnally and DJ Starr had 11 points each.

Despite the loss, the Wildcats' postseason hopes remain very much alive as they now turn their attention to the upcoming NAIA Men's Basketball National Championship selection show. Bethel will learn its fate on March 5 at 6 p.m. CT when the national field is announced.

Head Coach Jeff Britt praised his team's resilience and growth throughout the conference tournament run.

"I'm proud of the way our guys competed all week," Britt said. "We knew coming in that to win this tournament we'd have to go through the best, and that's exactly what we did. We battled the No. 1 team in the country possession by possession. Now we'll regroup, get healthy, and be ready for whatever opportunity comes our way."

The Wildcats put together a strong regular season and an impressive showing in the conference tournament, positioning themselves squarely on the national radar. Their resume includes key wins and a competitive showing against one of the nation's elite programs in the title game.

Now, Bethel waits.

The Wildcats, along with fans and supporters, will gather March 5 at 6 p.m. CT to watch the selection show and find out if their season will continue on the national stage.
