Bethel Wildcats Defeat Florida College 96-85 in Centennial Bank Classic

MCKENZIE, Tenn. - In a high-octane contest that showcased the Bethel Wildcats' offensive firepower and defensive pressure, the Wildcats defeated Florida College 96-85 win Saturday in the Centennial Bank Classic. The victory highlighted standout individual performances, a balanced team effort, and pivotal contributions from the bench.

A Strong Start, Powered by Balanced Scoring

Bethel came out with a fast-paced, aggressive style of play, shooting 48.1% from the floor and a blistering 45% from beyond the arc. The Wildcats used their superior shooting efficiency to build an early lead, but Florida College stayed competitive through their own quick-scoring offense.

David Starr, despite facing foul trouble in the first half, managed to recover in the second half and finish as the leading scorer for Bethel with 15 points. His performance was crucial, as he gave the Wildcats a consistent offensive threat both mid-range and from the free-throw line. Despite struggles at the line, with Bethel hitting only 61.9% of their free throws, the Wildcats' overall shooting from the floor helped mitigate that weakness.

Supporting Starr in the scoring effort were Trevor Chatman, who added 13 points, and Kendan Maddox, who contributed 11 points. The balanced attack continued as Ethan Turner in the post and Tyler Neely from the wing position both finished with 10 points, ensuring that five Wildcats scored in double figures—an important factor in the game's outcome. This depth was one of the key reasons for Bethel's success, as Florida College was unable to slow down the Wildcats' multiple scoring threats.

Defensive Pressure Sparks Key Runs

Defensively, the Wildcats made adjustments at halftime and came out with renewed intensity, setting the tone early in the second half. Bethel's pressure defense forced several turnovers from Florida College, with the Wildcats capitalizing on those miscues. Bethel scored 23 points off 15 turnovers committed by the Falcons, which was a major factor in the game.

The Wildcats were able to turn steals into quick transition points, with Connor Guthrie and Chatman leading the charge on fast breaks. Those steals—often in the backcourt—quickly turned into easy buckets, giving Bethel breathing room and helping to extend their lead.

While the Wildcats held the Falcons to just 37 second-half points, Florida College was able to mount some resistance, largely thanks to the performance of Johnny Torrence Jr., who came off the bench to score a team-high 24 points. Torrence's scoring, which included some timely three-pointers and aggressive drives to the basket, kept the Falcons within striking distance, but it wasn't enough to overcome Bethel's balanced offensive attack and strong defensive effort.

All-Tournament Team Honorees

At the conclusion of the Centennial Bank Classic, the All-Tournament Team was announced, and several players from the participating teams earned recognition for their outstanding play. Asa Hardyway of Fisk University, Jabrion Spikes of Georgetown College, and Johnny Torrence Jr. of Florida College were named to the All-Tournament Team for their excellent individual performances throughout the event. For the Bethel Wildcats, Brennon Marsh and Kendan Maddox earned All-Tournament honors, with Maddox also playing a key role in today's victory, contributing 11 points and playing lockdown defense.

Key Takeaways

The Wildcats' 96-85 win over Florida College was a well-rounded team effort, with scoring from all areas of the roster, effective defensive pressure, and efficient playmaking. As Bethel moves forward in the season, they will look to build on the lessons learned from this game: the importance of a balanced scoring attack, defensive versatility, and exploiting turnovers.

Despite continued struggles at the free-throw line (61.9%), the Wildcats' shooting from the floor and three-point range, combined with their aggressive defense, helped them weather the challenge posed by Florida College. The team's ability to perform under pressure—particularly in the second half—bodes well for the Wildcats as they head into tougher matchups.

Final Thoughts

This win was a defining moment for Bethel, showing that they are capable of sustaining offensive firepower while executing solid defense when it matters most. With contributions across the board and a deeper bench, the Wildcats are proving to be a formidable force this season. As they continue to build momentum, this victory in the Centennial Bank Classic will surely serve as a springboard for greater things to come.

"I'm really proud of our team's effort this weekend," Coach Britt said, his pride evident in his voice. "We played without Chauncey [Williams], and it wasn't easy, but we found a way to win in different ways. It shows the depth and character of this team. We had guys step up when it mattered most, whether it was scoring or making big defensive plays. We showed a lot of resilience, and that's what we'll need as we move forward."

The Wildcats had to adjust without Chauncey Williams, who was sidelined for the game, but they proved their versatility by getting contributions from multiple players. The balanced scoring, with five Wildcats in double figures, and the defensive pressure that helped create turnovers, were key to the win.

Looking ahead, Coach Britt acknowledged that while this victory was important, there is still work to be done as the team continues to grow. "We've got to continue to grow and move forward," he said. "We can't get complacent. There's always room for improvement, and we're going to keep working on both sides of the ball. We've shown we can win in different ways, but we've got to keep raising our level."

The Wildcats' next challenge comes in a matchup against Williams Baptist University, set to take place in Crisp Arena at 7 p.m. Tuesday. "We're looking forward to the next challenge," Coach Britt added. "Williams Baptist is a tough team, and we're going to need to be ready. We'll focus on our game plan, stay disciplined, and keep building on the momentum we've gained."

Bethel moved to 6-1 on the year.
