Cats Attempt to Snap Losing Streak with Visit to Cumberland University

LEBANON, Tenn. –The Bethel Wildcats will attempt to snap a five-game losing skid with a visit to Cumberland University in Lebanon Thursday night. Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m. 

After falling to then No. 17 Georgetown Saturday Bethel is 10-10 overall and 2-10 in the MSC. The Phoenix beat Life University Monday and moved to 11-5 and 7-5. CU has won three of their last four.

The teams met in McKenzie on November 20. Turnovers proved to be the undoing of the Wildcats in their 78-68 loss to CU.  The Wildcats turned it over a season high 24 times. CU had a 26-15 advantage in points off turnovers. The Phoenix attempted 20 more field goals than the Wildcats and hit ten more baskets than the Cats. Another difference factor was the CU bench outscored the Wildcat bench 24-17.

Drew Thomas led Bethel with 17 points. Jon Brown was saddled with foul trouble but finished with 18 points and a team high eight rebounds. Jamarius Mayberry scored 14 and had a team high four assists.

Tavon King led the Phoenix with 20 points. Tyler Byrd came off the CU bench and scored 16 huge points. Isaac Stephens hurt the Cats in the paint, finishing with 14 tallies. Cumberland had a 44-24 margin in points in the paint. T J Stargell was in double figures with 13 points.

The Wildcats are averaging 74.7 points per outing. They yield 71.2.

Kamron Rose leads Bethel in scoring at 11.6 points per game. Brown follows at 11.5 while Mayberry averages 10.2 per outing. 

Jarred Walker enters the game with 397 career assists which is 11th all-time in program history. He is 3rd all-time in steals with 207.

Combining his play at West Florida and Bethel, Brown is a member of the 1,000 Point Club with 1, 179 career points. Brown has scored 332 as a Wildcat.

Bethel shoots 42 percent from the floor while their opponents are at 43 percent. The Cats are at 32 percent in made three-pointers while the opposition is at 32 percent. Bethel shoots 68 percent from the foul line. The Cats outrebound their opponents 39-31 per outing.

Jeff Britt is in his 22nd year as the head men's basketball coach at Bethel and his 33rd year as a college basketball coach. His record as a head coach is 491-339 and includes 11 seasons with 20-plus wins. He currently ranks 10th for most wins among active NAIA Division I men's basketball coaches. Britt is 385-296 at Bethel.

Jeremy Lewis was named head coach for men's basketball at Cumberland on March 19, 2018, after spending the previous nine seasons as the women's coach for the Phoenix. Lewis is 45-50 with the men's program.
