Wildcats Tip Off Season with Victory over CUH in Annual Chick-fil-A Classic

MCKENZIE, Tenn. – The Bethel Wildcats tipped off their season in the Chick-fil-A Classic in Crisp Arena with an impressive 85-66 win over Campbellsville-Harrodsburg Friday night. CUH dropped to 1-3 on the young season. Prior to the Bethel game, Blue Mountain beat a short-handed Oakland City squad 69-58.

The Wildcats jumped out to an 11-2 lead only to see the Pioneers tie the game at 13 all at the 12:16 mark. CUH took a 23-18 margin, but the Cats battled back and regained the lead at 31-27. Bethel would never relinquish the lead and take a 41-34 advantage into the locker room at the half.

After moving out to a 49-37 margin, Bethel maintained a double-digit advantage much of the second half.

Bethel shot 42 percent from the floor and hit nine three-pointers. CUH shot 37 percent from the field and knocked down five three-pointers. Bethel had a resounding margin in rebounds at 45-29.

Bethel's Jamarius Mayberry had a double-double with 16 points and a career high 16 rebounds. Jon Brown was solid with 16 points. Six players had eight points or more for the victorious Cats. Senior Jarred Walker had eight points, four steals and five assists.

Tyron Duncan led the Pioneers with a game high 18 points.

Coach Jeff Britt who won his 482nd game said, "We are happy to open with a solid win. CUH is a good team that will win a lot of games this year. They made us work hard and this is the type of team we needed to play. We did a good job on the boards, and I liked our effort. Jamarius really hit the boards and was intense the entire night. Jon is a high energy player who makes everyone around him better. With a nice lead in the second half, we were able to play a lot of people and that helps us to have fresh legs Saturday. Oakland City will be another tough test for us. I like their guards and they have an outstanding big man."

The schedule is reversed Saturday as Bethel will take on Oakland City at 4 p.m. while Blue Mountain and CUH will play at 2 p.m.
